Abstract
Energy is a key component for the development of any human activity. However,
there is little information on the energetic situation of households in Guatemala,
especially at territorial level. Since access to energy is an essential component
of sustainable development, this article aims to study the energy situation of
households based on an energy poverty index. The Multidimensional Energy
Poverty Index (MEPI), developed by the Oxford Initiative for Poverty and Human
Development, OPHI, was used to measure the country’s energy poverty. This index
was constructed using the statistical inputs of the Encovi 2006 and 2014. The results
reveal that 6 out of 10 households in the country are energy poor, resembling the
general poverty levels of Guatemala.
