The concept of revolution in the Biography of Turcios Lima, by
Ricardo Ramírez
Abstract
The Biography of Turcios Lima is one of the reflections about the rise and fallof the
Guatemalan revolutionary movement during the 1960’s. In this writing, its author,
Ricardo Ramírez, compiles one of several critical perspectives that was considered in
those years after the 1966-1967 military campaign. Its importance stems from the fact
that it was considered to be a key text for rethinking revolution in the country, especially
for the group that founded the Guerrilla Army of the Poor, during the following decade.
It is not only a reflection about the role of the commander and strategist, in this case
Turcios, but about the rupture with the revolutionary generation represented in Arbenz
movement and the Communist Party, [Partido Guatemalteco del Trabajo]. This essay
also analyses the perspective of the role of indigenous peoples within the revolution
that Turcio’s Biography presents. Overall, this essay tries to open one’s gaze on the
possibilities and reflections of an historical period that has been homogenized or ignored.
It is thought to be a critical reflection on a tradition of struggle.

(FAR).
