Recipes for a planetary dystopia: Energy-climate architectures
Abstract
This essay approaches the possibilities of Eutopía, focusing on a particular place: the
planet and its climate, on which all its species depend for the dream of the «good life».
Gambling on that dream, it analyzes our current dystopia: the rapid destruction of
the last commons, the climate and atmosphere. That danger has spawned two mutually
reinforcing rhetorics: first that of catastrophic disaster and second that of «market
recipes» to green capitalism and blanket our fears of disaster with false promises. Both
discourses demobilize public action, leaving policy in the hands of a handful of countries
and hundreds of transnational corporations. It documents the failure to establish a sane
or viable policy architecture to contain climate warming from Kyoto in 1997 to COP21
Paris in 2015. The essay presents a state of the question on energy-climate architectures,
arguing for architectures that highlight diversity and participation, rather than one-size-
fits-all recipes within the framework of positivistic, «neutral» science. Weaving together
theory on nature-society with the current conjuncture of crisis and a state of the question
on energy-climate architectures, it proposes an alternative of sub-planetary political
epistemic communities as a path for learning hope.
Key words: Dystopia, transdimensional crisis, complexity, energy-climate architectures
for containing global warming, sub-planetary epistemic communities.
