Abstract

This paper introduces a rethinking of culture as proposed through the intercultural 
transformation of philosophy as developed by Raúl Fornet-Betancourt. A dynamic 
and historical understanding of culture like that advanced in intercultural philosophy 
represents one of the theoretical conditions of possibility for a dialogue of knowledge 
cultures. To highlight the relevance and contribution of this perspective, it is contrasted 
with the idea of culture developed by social anthropology both in its multicultural stream 
and in Central American Cultural Studies. A theoretical perspective of culture 
that pushes beyond multiculturalism on the one side and cultural hybridism on the other 
propitiates the making of “a world where many worlds fit”.

Introducción

Desde que la antropología asumió como tarea el abordaje, comprensión y, en 
ocasiones, domesticación de la alteridad

, la cultura ha sido parte esencial de 

su bagaje conceptual. Una de las seminales definiciones del término cultura 
fue elaborada por el antropólogo británico Edward B. Tylor (1974) a finales 
del siglo XIX –momento en que la antropología se aseguraba un lugar entre 
las disciplinas académicas–. Ahora bien, definiciones del concepto cultura 
existen casi tantas como corrientes y teorías antropológicas
