Abstract
Economists have been practicing the analysis of markets in an effort to describe and
understand how they work. Several tools of analysis allow the learning of the actions
and business strategies that influence in the behavior of enterprises and the profit
maximization.
The objective of this research is to determine the barriers to entry that has guaranteed
the survival of a monopoly, who is the provider of the service of transportation for
people and packages from Guatemala to Jalapa on the Sanarate, El Progreso trail. The
monopoly has kept his position of dominance for approximately half of century, so it
is presumed to be high entry barriers.
The principal conclusion of this investigation is the determination of a legal barrier as
the prior obstacle for competition in this market. According to the business analysis
and with the help of game theory, it is also concluded that the monopoly uses the
strategy of filling a large part or even filling the whole demand for this service in this
market, as the principal business barrier or strategist barrier.
